Who Are You Hiding From?

Playing Small Doesn't Protect You. It Hides Your Purpose.

About a year ago, I said no.

Not because I didn't want the opportunity.

Because I didn't think I should.

I had been invited to be featured in a local lifestyle magazine. It included a professional photo shoot, an interview, and the chance to introduce my work to people who had never heard of me. Instead of seeing it as an opportunity, I saw it as an expense.

An indulgence.

A risk.

I convinced myself it wasn't a smart business decision. I told myself being in a magazine wasn't going to grow my business. If I'm being completely honest...

I was afraid of what people would think.

"Who does she think she is?"

"She's paying to be in a magazine?"

"Wow... she's changed."

"She's gained weight."

It's amazing how our minds can create an entire conversation that hasn't even happened. So I said no.

Not because I wasn't capable.

Because I wasn't ready to be seen.

A Year Changed Everything

This year, the opportunity came back. And this time, I said yes.

Not because I suddenly felt prettier.

Not because I lost weight.

Not because I woke up one morning overflowing with confidence.

I said yes because I wasn't the same woman who had said no. Over the past year, I've worked incredibly hard.

I've refined my message.

I've grown my business.

I've written a book.

I've stepped onto stages.

I've invested in becoming a better coach, speaker, consultant, and leader.

Most importantly... I've become incredibly clear about my mission.

I walked into the studio for the photo shoot,  and something felt completely different.

It wasn't that I suddenly had more confidence.

I still noticed the things I would have noticed a year earlier.

I still wished parts of me looked different.

But none of that was driving the decision anymore.

What had changed was my clarity.

I wasn't walking in hoping people would approve of me.

I walked in as an author.

A speaker.

A coach.

A consultant.

A woman who knows exactly why she's here.

When you're clear about your purpose, you stop waiting to feel fearless. You simply stop letting fear have the final vote.

The Question That Changed Everything

Last year, I was asking myself, "What will people think?"

This year, I found myself asking a completely different question. "What if one person needs to hear my message?"

That one question changed everything. Because I realized something I hadn't understood before. The magazine wasn't for the people who already know me. They already know me. They've already formed their opinions. Whether they cheer me on or quietly judge me isn't really my business. This wasn't about them. It was about the woman who has never heard my story.

The woman who's quietly wondering if she's allowed to want something more.

The woman who's successful on paper but feels disconnected from herself.

The woman who's whispering, "There has to be more to life than just making it through the day."

If that feeling sounds familiar, you may also enjoy my blog, Why You Feel Unfulfilled Even When You're Successful, where I explore why outward success doesn't always translate into inner fulfillment.

If sharing my story helps even one woman find the courage to change hers...

Then saying yes was worth every penny.

That same shift in perspective is what inspired my blog, There Has to Be More to Life Than Just Making It Through the Day. It's the story of how I realized I wasn't looking for a different life—I was looking for a more intentional one.

Playing Small Isn't Humility

I think so many women confuse playing small with being humble.

We tell ourselves we're being practical.

Responsible.

Not wanting to make it "all about us."

But if your work has the power to help someone...

If your story could give another woman hope...

If your voice could remind someone they're not alone...

Then hiding isn't humility. It's fear. And fear has a funny way of disguising itself as logic.

"Now isn't the right time."

"Maybe next year."

"I should wait until I lose the weight."

"I need more experience."

"Who am I to put myself out there?"

I've said every one of those things. Maybe you have too.

Learning to stop hiding often begins with rediscovering who you are apart from everyone else's expectations. If that's something you're wrestling with, I think you'll appreciate Who Are You When Nobody Needs Anything From You?

Purpose Requires Visibility

Here's what I've learned.

Purpose isn't meant to stay hidden.

If you're called to lead... You have to be seen.

If you're called to teach... You have to speak.

If you're called to serve... People have to know you exist.

That doesn't mean becoming loud or seeking attention. It means having the courage to stop hiding behind your own doubts. Because the people who need what you have to offer can't find you if you never let yourself be seen.

One Final Thought

Walking into that photo shoot wasn't about getting my picture taken.

It was about choosing to stop letting fear make my decisions.

It was about trusting that my message is bigger than my insecurity.

It was about believing that if even one person finds hope because I was willing to be visible, then the vulnerability was worth it.

That's the thing about purpose.

It almost always asks something of us before it gives something back.

Sometimes it asks us to invest.

Sometimes it asks us to be uncomfortable.

Sometimes it simply asks us to stop hiding.

So let me leave you with this:

Are you really protecting yourself...

Or are you hiding your purpose?

Because playing small doesn't protect you.

It just makes it harder for the people who need you to find you.
